How to start learning Ukrainian?

If you're an absolute beginner:

  1. Take a self-study PodorozhiUA course. It's free and very basic. Go lesson by lesson, take notes, do the exercises, hand in your writing tasks. In this way, you'll get a general idea of Ukrainian.

  2. In parallel (or after step 1), take a Duolingo course. It'll help you to drill grammar and, more important, broaden your vocabulary.

  3. Get a notebook for the Ukrainian grammar and a separate one for Ukrainian words. Draw grammar tables, write down the words in all their grammatical forms with a word stress and examples of how to use the word.

  4. After the previous steps, activate your Ukrainian grammar. Take the course "Basic Ukrainian Grammar" and revise each point step by step. It'll lay a solid foundation on which we'll be building our stories. Did you know that if you want to become fluent in Ukrainian, you need to learn approx. 80% of Ukrainian grammar? That's why this step is so important.

How to continue learning Ukrainian?

If you're at an intermediate level:

  1. Get "Yabluko. Elementary" book and go lesson by lesson. It'll teach you a lot of common words and more of grammar. You'll learn the communicative skills for everyday situations – talking about family, food, home, clothes, holidays, etc.

  2. Start reading Ukrainian books. You may start with those you like in your native language or with children's books ("Маленький Принц" and other). Find an audiobook, listen to it and simultaneously read it aloud (it helps to improve speaking). Write out the words, import them in Quizlet and learn them.

  3. Listen to Ukrainian songs. Find the lyrics, write out new words and learn them. Sing the songs (it improves your speaking and listening and helps to remember the words).

  4. Watch videos. Use LanguageReactor to get the subtitles. Write out useful phrases and learn them.
